To plan or not to plan?
Some people are free style creatives, they don’t want to be told what to do…give these people a few basic starting points ( or none ) or tools and they will forge ahead. Others love a plan. They find comfort in guidelines. Steps. Instructions. Shovers vs stackers. I’m a shover, my sister is a stacker. We both love kooky, artsy things, we just have a very different way of interacting with them. For the loosie goosies out there, you shovers.…go forth…apply stickers wherever you feel the need…you can always pull them off the wall and reapply to finesse your installation as needed. Put your favourite music on, go solo or invite a bunch of friends over. Wine, food, laughs and a new look kitchen wall..why not. For the planners here are some generic guidelines. Feel free to check out our Specific Installation guidelines page for more structure in regards to some example installations.
Generic Guidelines
- Prep your surface, remove any dust, blue tack, tape. Move furniture out of the way.
- Play some music that you love whatever inspires you, makes you feel relaxed or energised or motivated to move, whatever feels right. Music creates energy and you will be creating a visual energy with your stickers …your installation will affect whoever uses that space. What feels right? Joy or calm, inspiration or reflection.
- Utilising a higher surface to place your sheets of stickers is helpful, a table or a bed. It will save you from bending down repeatedly.
- Peel off the background sticker from each sheet before you peel off the individual stickers. Simply lift up one corner and peel away the whole background sticker. * You could reuse these in some other project or simply discard. I like to get rid of these first, it saves a lot of time and makes putting stickers back onto the sheet, if and when you may want/need to, very easy.
- If you want to record a video of your installation process, fun to watch later and to share, prop your phone against whatever furniture, windowsills etc or use a stand if you have one to position your phone to capture most of the space your working on. Check that you can see what you want to see, adjust lighting if you want to. Put your phone on time – lapse and press start. If you haven’t done this before it’s a lot of fun. *Don’t worry if you need to leave the room or have a tea break..just leave your camera rolling.
- If your installation is bigger than a 250 pack it’s handy to have water or some kind of beverage or snacks handy.
- Decide how tightly you want to space your stickers. Ie: 1 finger apart vs 3 fingers apart or 1 hand apart. Try a trial patch on a wall first to see how you feel about two or three different approaches. Once you decide on your spacing communicate that clearly to anyone else you may be installing with. Make sure you are both/all on the same page re: spacing. Check each others spacing at first to see if you have the same feel going on. Test your spacing in a small area first, step back, asses, finesse.
- Smooth each sticker down. a quick swipe will do for most. – Start from one point ie: a corner or one side of the wall/space. This will facilitate flow..creating a natural progression. It also serves to eliminate or reduce problem areas where two seperate groups of stickers meet and need to merge.
- Step back every now and then to asses the installation, you may need to change a few sticker positions as you go for better flow or to address potential problem areas ie: a light switch.
- For installations of 1000 stickers or more get help or be prepared to do it over a longer timeframe.
- Relax…if you don’t like how it looks you can always change it. If your surface is clean then you can reuse your stickers 8-10 times.. If you don’t dust/clean your surfaces expect more of a 5-6 times re-use.
- A simple chalk outline ie: for a circle can help, or if you want to pop down 2-3 general directional lines lightly in chalk that can be handy too. Simply wipe off the wall with a slightly damp cloth afterwards.
- Layering. You can layer stickers but they will leave a residue of gum on the sticker beneath them. Experiment with a couple first and see how you feel about this. If you’re creating a mandala feature some layering of colours can look great especially in the center.
